Your Domain Name
As professionals, our image is very important. How we
come across on the internet is important because it is often
the only thing prospects and clients see before meeting us
in person or talking on the phone. It needs to project a
professional presence.
To be professional, you need to have your own domain
name.
Go to the whois database at
http://www.networksolutions.com/cgi-bin/whois/whois/
Search for possible domain names. For example, try
yourname.com. If someone already has that domain name, the
whois site will tell you who owns it. Does that mean that
you can't use that name? Yes, unless you can talk the
current owner into giving up the domain name you'll have to
choose another.
A Quick Story (speakers always say that!): When
I first started my company TechTamers, I found out that
another company had techtamers.com. But when I tried to
find techtamers.com on the web, I saw that they only had
a plain page, saying the site was under construction. The
Whois database told me that the site was up for renewal
within six months. So I started emailing and calling the
other company. I tried contacting their technical contact
listed on the Whois page. No response from anyone. But at
the end of the six months, they didn't renew the site. I
kept checking daily and was able to lock in the site. So
just because the domain name is not available now, it may
be later.
So how do you choose another name? You can try:
- yourname.net - usually used by companies that provide
net access
- yourname.org - usually used by organizations, such as
nsaspeaker.org
- yourcompany.com, .net, .org
- yourbook.com
- yourtopic.com
When you find a name that fits you, you need to register
it. Since you're not ready yet to put your website up, I
suggest you "park" your site. You can park it free at either
of these sites:
http://www.valueweb.net
Click on Domain Registration from the front page.
http://www.domainvalet.com/
Choose either to park your domain free or get one of
their free web sites (I've not tried it, so I can't
recommend it - you're on your own!)
This is a Sample of the Website which is
included with every TechTamers Teleseminar.
I'm ready to order! Take me back to the Teleseminars
page!
